ART Programs: Encouraging all forms of artistic expression to help youth realize their unique and creative selves.
“I fell in love with art around the age of six. Art was my only outlet. Aside from music, art is the thing that I like to escape. And I appreciate other artists who have that talent and that eye for detail and eye for their own imagination. Art is a part of my life and it influences me completely.”
Kids need a place to create and to have fun. Chris grew up in the town of Tappahannock, VA where there are limited resources for arts education and recreation. Chris’s mother Joyce and Aunt Christine have been working with the community to create a center with arts education classes, sports and a creative playground to give the kids a safe place to have fun and, above all, to be themselves. The SLF pilot programs is launching in the summer of 2013.
In February of 2013, eleven extraordinary dancers were awarded full scholarships to the Debbie Allen Dance Academy as the class of 2013 Symphonic Love Scholars. Chris will work with Ms. Debbie Allen to inspire and support the dancers throughout their intensive year of training. Each of the Scholars will train in comprehensive dance techniques, which is part of the mission of DADA, to be able to speak the language of dance anywhere in the world. At the end of the year, the scholars will perform in the annual DADA concert and be invited to participate in various auditions. Chris shares the principles of DADA that “Arts education empowers and defines self-esteem, discipline, creativity and self-confidence.”
SLF is partnering with Creative Visions Foundation to launch “Rock Your World”, and online and in-classroom program to inspire young people to use their creativity to affect positive change. The program will enable young people everywhere to tap into their creative sparks and raise awareness and action around the issues that matter most to them.
Chris found out that due to decreases in funding in this difficult economy, kids from HOLA – Heart of Los Angeles were lacking transportation to HOLA’s arts and recreation programs. So, Chris bought HOLA vehicles to take nearly 500 kids each year to HOLA’s programs.
